Prarambhik

Minimum Age required : 7 Years

  • Sapta Swaras
  • Adi Talam, mode of reckoning it and the parts of the Talam etc.
  • Slokas and definition of Swaram, Sangitam, Sruthi, Talam.
  • Introduction of trinity
  • Understanding 3 speeds and kalapramanam
  • PRACTICAL
  • Saralis; janta swaras ; Daatu Swaras; Upper sthayi swaras & Alankaram in 1st speed ,in Mayamalav Gowla Ragam
  • Sarali, Daatu Swaras, Upper Sthayi - should sing all three speeds.
  • Janta Varisai only two speed
  • Alankaram - Only First Speed

Praveshika Pratham

Minimum Age required : 8 Years & above
  • TEHROY
  • Names of Sapta Swaras
  • Names of 12 Swaras - Sthanas
  • Names of widely used Thaalas
  • Introduction to music trinity and Purandaradasa
  • Widely used musical forms
  • PRACTICAL
  • Simple compositions of Purandaradasa and Thyagaraja

  • Devotional songs
  • Folk melodies
  • Alankaram only 3 speeds in Mayamalava Gowla Ragam
  • Four Geethams and two simple swarajathis

Praveshika Poorna

Minimum Age required : 8 Years & above
  • TEHROY
  • Biographies of Trinity, Purandaradasa and Swathitirunal
  • Twelve Swarasthanams
  • Thirty Five Talams
  • Gamakas that are more widely used
  • Vadi, Samvadi, Vivadi, Anuvadi, Nada, Sruthi
  • Raga Lakshanas For all the Ragas mentioned in syllabus for practical
  • PRACTICAL
  • Three Tana Varnams in ADI Talam
  • Ten Compositions, covering as many composors as possible, mainly Trinity, from among the ragas mentioned below:
    1. Vasantha, 2. Bilahari, 3. Suddhasavari, 4. Hindolam, 5. Mohanam, 6. Sri Ranjani, 7. Suddha Danyasi, 8. Hamsadwani, 9. Hamsanadham, 10. Poornachandrika, 11. Kharaharapriya, 12. Simmendramadyamam
  • Alankaram - 3 speeds and Sampoorna Ragas other than Mayamalava Gowla and 2 janya Ragas
  • All the portions compulsory
  • Examiner’s choice is final

Madhyama Pratham

Minimum Age required : 12 Years & above

  • Raga Classification-Janaka-Janya Paddhati, Sampoorna, Shadava, Audava, Upanga, Bhashanga, Vakra etc.
  • Ragalakshanas of the Ragas of this year and previous year
  • Sixteen Swarasthanams
  • Melakartha scheme
  • Musical forms; Geetham, Varnam, Swarajathi, Keerthanam, Krithi
  • Writing any Adi Tala Varnam in notation
  • Biography of Kshetrajna, Ganam Krishna Iyer, Badrachala Ramdas, Harikesanallur Muttaiya Bhagavathar, Pattanam Subramanya Iyer
  • PRACTICAL
  • Five Varnams in Adi Talam & One in Ata Thalam and abililty to sing in Second egres of speed
  • Ten Composition, covering as many composers as possible, mainly Trinity, from among the following Ragas :
    1. Bowli, 2. Darbar, 3. Kanada, 4. Kamas, 5. Malayamarutham, 6. Bahudari, 7. Poorvikalyani, 8. Kalyani, 9. Shanmukapriya, 10. Keeravani, 11. Sankarabharanam, 12. Madhyamavathi

Madhyama Poorna

Minimum Age required : 14 Years & above

  • Ragalakshanas of the ragas prescribed from Preveshika Poorna to this year
  • Ability to write Ata Thala Varnam with notations. Prosody
  • Swarakshara
  • Yatis- Gopuchha yati, Srotovaha yati, Mridanga yati, Damaru yati etc.
  • Critical appreciation of krithis of TRINITY
  • Forms figuring in art-music , sacred music, dance music, and opera
  • Classification of instruments
  • Biographies of Arunachala kavi, Gopala- Krishna Bharathi, Kavi Kunjara Bharathi, Jayadeva, Narayana Theertha, Annamacharya
  • PRACTICAL
  • Five Varnams in Adi Talams and Two in ATA Thalam and ability to sing in second degree of speed
  • Ten compositions including at least Two in 2 kalai, Two javalis and one pancharatna krithi
  • Attempt raga Alapana and Kalpana swaras
  • Ability to sing in different SHRUTIS
  • Ragas to be covered :
    1. Atana, 2. Abhogi, 3. Begada, 4. Ananda Bairavi, 5. Nattaikuranji, 6. Kambhoji, 7. Mukari, 8. Arabhi, 9. Saranga, 10. Panthuvarali, 11. Sri Ragam, 12. Suruti.
    As many composers as possible, mainly “TRINITY” should be covered. Talas to be covered : Adi, Roopakam, Misra- Chapu, and Khanda-chapu.
  • Compositions in Ragas Jagan Mohini and Kedaragowlai
  • Compositions of Bhadrachala Ramdas and Sadasiva bramhendra

Visharad Pratham

Minimum Age required : 15 Years & above

  • Vedic Music- evolution of scales
  • Raga lakshanas of all ragas prescribed from Preveshika Poorna to this year
  • Writing notations of Krithi in Adi and Roopaka Talam
  • Principal “ Thats and Talas” of Hindustani Music
  • Shadanga, Shodasangas, Tala dasa- pranas
  • General view of the works of Bharatha, Matanga, Sarangadeva, Venkatamaki, Ramamatya, Subbharama Dikshitar
  • Biography of Arunagirinathar, Haridas, Tansen, Vishnu Digambar paluskar, Bhathkande.
  • Manodarma Sangeetham
  • PRACTICAL
  • Five ADI Tala varnams and THREE ATA Tala Varnams. Ability to sing in second degree of speed
  • Ten compositions including TWO javalis, one each of Thillana, Navagraha Krithi, Navavarna Kriti, pancharatna krithi, thirupugazh and panchalinga kriti
  • Raga alapana in detail, singing Kalpana swaras in two speeds, and Neraval in the ragas prescribed below :
    (at least Two)
    Ragas to be covered :
    1. Gowlai, 2. Saveri, 3. Nattai, 4. Thodi, 5. Bhairavi, 6. Asaveri, 7. Yaukulakambhoji, 8. Dhanyasi, 9. Devangandhari, 10. Sahana, 11. Reethigowlai, 12. Neelambari
    As many well-known composers as possible must be covered. At least one composition should be in Tisra Nadai

Visharad Poorna

Minimum Age required : 16 Years & above

  • Biography : Beathovan, Bach, Mozart, Fox Strangways
  • Life history of 20th century composers like Mysore Vasudevachariyar, Papanasam Sivan
  • PRACTICAL
  • Five ADI Tala varnams and THREE Ata Tala Varnams. Ability to sing in 2nd degree of speed
  • Ten compositions including one each of Pancharatna Kriti, Padam, Ragamalika Thillana, Astapathi, Tarangam, and Thirupugazh
  • Pallavis - atleast Two in Chaturasra nadai singing in Three speeds (Tri kalams)
  • Detail Raga alapana, Tanam, as would precede Pallavi, Neraval, Kalpana swaram.
  • Ragas to be covered :
